Astana is a city in the north-east of Kazakhstan, in 1997 received the status of the capital of the state instead of Almaty. The former center remains the cultural and educational dominant of the country, but recently Nur-Sultan has become a million-plus city which is rapidly catching up with the unofficial “southern capital”. For nearly 20 years, so much public and private funds have been invested in Nur-Sultan that recently an unremarkable provincial city in the bare steppe has become a modern metropolis.
